33rd Annual General Meeting

Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to MRA’s 33rd Annual General Meeting 2015.

It has truly been a privilege and honour for me to serve as President of MRA and to represent the Association at the Federation of Asia-Pacific Retailers Associations (FAPRA) on the Board of Council.

I would like to thank all Board members and the many volunteers who have contributed their time, energy and knowledge to make MRA such an active and meaningful organisation.

In particular, I wish to express my deepest appreciation and thanks to Mr James Loke, Deputy President of MRA as well as Organising Chairman of the 18th Asia-Pacific Retail Convention & Exhibition (APRCE) 2017, who led our MRA team on our successful bidding to host this prestigious event in Malaysia in two years’ time. I wish to also commend Datuk Wira (Dr) Hj Ameer Ali Mydin, Council Member, for the hard work, dedication, vital contribution and support you have had to put in to ensure that all issues related to GST and affecting MRA and our members were heeded by the relevant authorities.

As this is my first report to the AGM, I would like to highlight some of the key initiatives undertaken during my Presidency that I hope will continue into the future.

The decision to bid to host the 18th APRCE 2017 was perhaps our boldest step thus far. This event was last held in Malaysia 20 years ago. MRA aims to make the 18th APRCE 2017 another world-class regional event with international and global leaders being invited to be our speakers, and bringing delegates from different parts of the world to Malaysia.

To nominate exceptional and deserving MRA members to be in the running for FAPRA Awards - “Customer Service Excellence Award” and “Best Efforts In Social Responsibility Award”.

These Awards aim to pay tribute to retailers who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in providing quality customer service and distinguishing themselves from the rest of their peers, and to recognise those who have introduced, or continue to sustain their efforts in being socially responsible organisations in the areas of environment conservation, community relations, contributions to society, public education, etc.

MRA will continue to highlight pertinent GST issues of concern to the relevant authorities, in order to lessen the impact of GST implementation on our members.

The collection of music royalty payment by different collecting agencies namely RPM and PRISM is still unresolved and MRA, together with other major stakeholders, will continue to pursue this matter with relevant authorities.

MRA will continuously engage with the relevant government agencies for the betterment of the retail industry and to seek viable solutions to stimulate positive market sentiments.

As I look at the year under review, I am grateful to have been part of a dedicated Executive team during my twelve months on the Board. It has been a very eventful and positive year for MRA which included our move from our old office in Seri Kembangan to UOA Bangsar in 2014. As we move forward with renewed energy and vigor, I am confident it is going to be a more exciting and challenging year ahead especially the year 2017. All these could not be achieved without everyone’s support and commitment, and MRA’s pursuit of its goals and extension of its networks and international links through its association with FAPRA members.

My appreciation goes to all my fellow Council Members and members of the various committees who have worked very hard, displayed great initiatives and extended to the Association their unfailing support, assistance and advice, despite their busy schedule. Last but not least, to our Secretariat which has been soldiering on even though with limited resources, I express my heartfelt thanks and we look forward to your continuing good work.
